Wellbutrin (Bupropion)
Wellbutrin (Bupropion) is in a class of medications called antidepressants (mood elevators). It works by increasing certain types of activity in the brain. Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Wellbutrin SR are FDA approved drugs for treating depression. Wellbutrin can also been used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Wellbutrin is used also to decrease the sexual side effects caused by other antidepressants. Bupropion is the active ingredient in this drug and chemical name for this medication. It is also sold under the brand name Zyban to help stop the urge to smoke.
The FDA
approved Wellbutrin XL for the treatment of major depressive disorder
in patients aged 18 or over. It
has two advantages over other previously available treatments: It is
taken only once a day and there is less risk of side-effects; such as
sexual dysfunction and weight gain which are common problems with
other medications.
Bupropion is
sold under different brand names for different uses. For example: Bupropion
(Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR) is used to treat depression. Bupropion (Zyban)
is used to help people stop smoking. If
you are already taking medicine for mental depression or to help you
stop smoking, discuss this with your health care professional before
taking bupropion. You can receive only one prescription for bupropion
at a time.
Wellbutrin comes as a tablet and a sustained-release tablet forms to be taken orally. Wellbutrin Dosage: The regular tablet wellbutrin is usually taken three or four times times a day, with doses at least 6 hours apart. The sustained-release tablet (Wellbutrin SR, Zyban) is usually taken twice a day, with doses at least 8 hours apart. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take bupropion exactly as directed.
